Graduate students seeking to specialize in Polish Studies, whether their career will be academic or professional, have a variety of options for study in Bloomington. The Department of Slavic and East European Languages and Cultures (SLAV) maintains MA and PhD programs that can be anchored in courses and research on Polish topics. Similarly, the Russian and East European Institute (REEI) offers an MA, PhD Minor and Graduate Certificate with room to concentrate on Poland.
SLAV Graduate Programs
An MA track designed for students specializing in area studies, with the flexibility to concentrate in Polish. Requirements include:
- 2 Courses in Slavic literature, culture, or film at the graduate level
- 3rd-Year Proficiency in a Slavic Departmental Language
- 18 additional credits, 9 of which must be taken in SLAV
- 30 credits from an MA
- 1 Course in relevant linguistics
- 2 Semesters of a second Slavic Language
- 12 credits from a PhD minor
- 6 Courses in literature, culture, or film (4 minimum in SLAV)
REEI Graduate Programs
The MA in Russian and East European Area Studies is a terminal professional degree in which Polish may be the student's area language, studied in language courses during the program and applied to their interdisciplinary MA essay research.
4 Courses in Area Studies (Social Science, Historical/Geographical, Sociocultural, Literature)
4 Courses in the area of concentration (disciplinary or geographic)

In addition to coursework in approved Area Studies courses, the Graduate Certificate in Russian and East European Area Studies provides an emphasis on research. Graduate Certificate candidates will present a final portfolio exhibiting their scholarship.

The PhD Minor in Russian and East European Area Studies can supplement the student's degree in their chosen discipline. For example, it can be paired with the PhD in Slavic Literature and Culture to meet that degree's PhD Minor requirements.
